cocoa link to deforestation

Alarming Concern
Trees are being cut down to grow cocoa plants.
From 1990 to 2015, almost 75% of forests in Ivory Coast were cleared to grow cocoa fields
Why this issue could not be stopped ?
-
The farmers and authorities could not further develop their plans to grow cocoa using less land
-
The small farmers did not enough financial support to grow cocoa using advanced mechanisms.

Child Labour

Child Trafficking
Children from other regions of Africa are forced into Ivory Coast or Ghana to work in cocoa fields

Their rights
They do not have access to education and earns as little as $5 for their work weekly

Role of the big companies
They do not ensure that child labour is not involved in the cocoa production
Improvements in FairTrade

The demand for cocoa is increasing very rapidly worldwide. So, fairTrade is used to ensure that
the small farmers can earn a maximum revenue from their cocoa production. the fairtrade also checks if the cocoa production occurs in a sustainable way and do not have negative impacts on the environment.
Fairtrade Fairer trade
Reveal the bad practices
The authorities earning profits illegally from the cocoa business should be revealed

The pricing agreement
The cocoa producing countries have agreed to increase the minimum cocoa price per ton by 60-70%
change negotiation standards
The cocoa producers should control the supply chain and set their own prices without the need of international clients.

farmers compensation
Small Farmers are compensated up to $2400 per ton of cocoa sold. They earn nearly the double amount they were getting before this deal.

why it matters to us?
Unfortunately the cocoa products sold nowadays are still derived from child labour and cocoa farming is the root cause of deforestation.
We should always choose FairTrade Cocoa to make sure the cocoa we consume is produced in an ethical and sustainable manner
